How To Elope In Scotland

WHY ELOPE IN SCOTLAND?

If you’ve found this page, you probably (like us) are at least a little bit in love with the landscapes, history, and beauty of Scotland.

We feel so lucky to get to live, work, and raise our children in this beautiful country, and we feel passionately about sharing its stories, histories, and landscapes with as many people as we can.

Scotland has mountains, castles, beaches, cobble-stoned cities, valleys, lochs, islands and forests, and so much more to explore.

Whether your dream elopement day is a cosy bothy in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, a beachside cottage in a small fishing village along the coast and islands, or a romantic weekend in the historic city of Edinburgh, Scotland has what you’re looking for, and we have the knowledge and experience to make your dream elopement happen.

Step-By-Step Guide to Eloping In Scotland

Step 1: Do some research

Have a look online (TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, blog posts) at images of elopements in Scotland and make a note of what you like about each location. Make sure to notice what the weather was like and what colour the landscapes were. This will give you a good idea of the time of year the image was taken, as Scotland’s landscapes change and vary a lot throughout the year.

Step 2: Choose a time of year

You don’t need an exact date, just an idea of when you’d like to have the elopement so that you can begin getting in touch with suppliers. Once you’ve chosen a photographer you want to work with, you can get the date solidified and book other things from there.

Step 3: Choose your suppliers

Find a photographer and/or videographer whose style you love and feel you connect with. Sometimes, photographers will also offer videography; make sure you ask about this if it’s something you’re interested in. We offer both photography and videography, and our combined photo & video package is among our most popular packages. Your photographer should be able to help you to find the rest of your suppliers: Celebrant, Florist, somewhere to stay during your trip, and whatever else you’d like to book for the day.

Step 4: Get the legalities covered

You can legally marry anywhere in Scotland, so make sure to discuss with your celebrant the logistics of doing this. Some couples find it easier to do the legal part at home before they leave for their trip, and have the ceremony be symbolic and personal. However, you absolutely can make the ceremony legal in Scotland, and the celebrant you choose will be able to walk you through doing so.

Step 5: Plan the day!

We love helping our clients to plan the run of their day, depending on the kind of images they want to capture, the lighting they are hoping for, and the types of locations they’d like to have captured. This is always a fun part (and it’s way less stressful than planning a traditional wedding)! We like to collaborate on a Pinterest board to get a vision for the kind of locations and lighting our couples lean towards, and then send out a curated list of locations that we think will be perfect for each couple. We can help you with finding transport, a place to stay, and where to eat during the day, as well as discuss things you’ll need to pack for the practicalities of an outdoor elopement in Scotland.

Get in touch with us and we can walk you through the each step!

Where to Elope in Scotland

Edinburgh

Cobbled streets, tucked-away closes, bustling pubs, shadowed corners, history under every footstep. Edinburgh is the perfect location for the couple who want to experience the romance and magic of the City of Edinburgh.

With Arthur’s Seat, St. Anthony’s Chapel, Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle, The Royal Mile, Princes Street Gardens, and Dean Village, you won’t run out of options for stunning locations for both your ceremony and your portraits in this beautiful city.

Where to Elope in Scotland

Glencoe

Wild, rugged, beautiful Glencoe is truly a stunning location to elope. It offers gorgeous views right off the car park, and so would be well suited to couples of any ability. There are lots of little spots throughout the Glencoe valley that we know well and can explore with you to create a diverse and beautiful gallery that tells the story of your day.

Being only 2 hours by car from Glasgow and 2.5 hours by car from Edinburgh, Glencoe is very well located for couples who would like the convenience of staying in the city but the epic imagery of the Scottish Highlands for their Scotland Elopement.

Where to Elope in Scotland

The Islands

Scotland is home to some beautiful islands, each of them offering a unique and diverse landscape for your elopement day. A few islands that are perfect for an elopement include the Isle of Skye, the Isle of Harris, the Isle of Lewis, the Isle of Mull, and the Isle of Arran.

The islands themselves offer stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, gorgeous mountain ranges and valleys, as well as forests and lochs, all of which would be beautiful locations for a Scotland Elopement.

Where to Elope in Scotland

Central Scotland

There are so many gorgeous locations in Scotland to elope that are off the beaten track or are not the most ‘touristy’ or well-known locations. a few of our favourites include:

The Hermitage, Dunkeld
The Trossachs National Park
The East Neuk of Fife
The Scottish Borders
Gairloch & Torridon
Aviemore, The Cairngorms

We love to tailor the elopement experience uniquely to each client that we work with, and this goes for the location of their elopement, too. We’ve been capturing elopements all over Scotland for the past eight years, so we have a great knowledge of what the different landscapes and areas have to offer. We would love to find the perfect location for you.

In the past, we have even captured elopements in locations only reachable via a what.three.words code, and then a 45-minute hike, without ever making note of the final ceremony spot, to keep the location private for that couple.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely! We specialise in elopements and intimate ceremonies, which means we capture gatherings with up to 15 guests. However, if you’re hoping to invite a lot more guests than that, there are plenty of incredible wedding photographers in Scotland who would love to capture your day!

  • There are so many to choose from so we certainly appreciate this questions. The key thing to consider is who do you personally connect with, who will be able to tell the story of your day in a way that feels beautiful and authentic to the two of you as a couple? Who do you want with you to celebrate you on the day? The best way to figure this out is to get in touch with a few photographers and celebrants and get chatting with them about their style and approach. We also have a list of suppliers who we work well with and who we know offer an excellent experience for their couples, and we’d be happy to share those suppliers with you!

  • We love capturing elopements where children are involved. We have two little boys (and another child on the way!) and so we are super in tune with how the family dynamic will afect your day. We recommend planning to have a close friend or family member with you who is in charge of childcare throughout the day. That way, you can feel free to enjoy your day without the added stress of nappy changes, naps and snacks. This person will be able to come with you to whichever locations you’d like to include images of the whole family in.

  • Every supplier will have a different approach to booking, but we are currently taking bookings for 2026 and 2027 elopemetns. Take a look at our work and if you feel it connects with you, we’d absolutely love to hear from you! You can reach out via our contact form (which you can find on the navigation at the top of this page!) or at our dedicated elopements page, here!
